curriculum vitae

Born Tjaša Iris (as Tjaša Demšar until 2006) in Kranj, under the Alps in Northern Slovenia, she led a happy and careless childhood in Žiri, a small Pre-Alpine village in the house built by her grandfather (a local doctor and a dentist as well as musician) and her grandmother (owning shoe industry and designing lace patterns for women producing famous local lace of Idrija). Until 2006 her last name was Demšar. In 1987 she went to Ljubljana to study international relations. In 1988 she moved to Florence, Italy to study fine art. She left the family and gained total financial independency by doing student jobs since then. She first studied photography followed by a double study photography with Tony Metz and painting & colour theory with Leo Forte. Spent a semester at Staffordshire University, England in spring 1991 and continued her studies at Academie Minerva in Groningen, the Netherlands 1991 - 1995, studying multimedia art first with Bert Schrutter (video art) and Rob Nypels (photography) and later decided just for painting - her biggest love and studied with Johann Van Oordt, Asaf Ben Menahem and Frank Huchinson. She earned her M.F.A. in Painting in 1995.
She is a member of Slovenian Artist Association and AIAP Association Internationale des Arts Plastique since 1996.

Her first sold painting was bought by Academie Minerva in 1995. (Blue garden 1994, 130 x 150 cm).

She moved back to Italy in 1994. Had her first personal exhibition in 1996 near Venice. Followed by numerous group and personal exhibitions in Slovenia. Travelled and painted the nearby Croatian coast and islands. As well as the South of Italy from the visits to Russo’s family. Her most known paintings from this time are Beli 1996 (from island Cres, Croatia), Vesuvio, 1996. In 1997- 8 she moved to Venice where she lived 7 years in beautiful Venetian palace Palazzo Ottolenghi in Quartiere di San Marco. In Venice she loved to paint the Armenian monastery gardens at San Lazzaro degli Armeni island as well as the Arab garden in the heart of historical Hotel Excelsior at Lido. Her most known paintings from this time are Arab garden of Lido Arab garden of Lido 1997, Armenian Garden.

In Venice she worked for prestigious Galleria A+A and started holding her own painting workshops.

In 2000 she spent her first winter in Paris at Cité Internationale des Arts, the most prestigious European Artist Resideny. From 2001 followed winters spent at Lake Tahoe Area and numerous travels in US, Italy, Austria and Slovenia. In 2004 she bought Villa Flora in the Pre-Coastal Wine Country of Slovenia, which is today her summer residency and painting studio. She spent the winter of 2004 in Marocco that inspired her a lot, the detailes, ornaments and colors first of all changed her paintings a lot. And she spent winters of 2005 and 2006 in Paris, where she had her first exhibition at the Gallery of Cité Internationale des Arts
in 2005 together with her South African friend Diek Grobler.
Since 2005 her works became more detailed.

Tjaša Iris is known for her intense use of color, especially via working through warm and cold, bright and dull and light and dark colors. Her often complex compositions—typically of gardens with lush vegetation —are both narrative and autobiographical. She also painted several landscapes, which usually depict dramatic skies and light situations, starlight nights and flowers and fruit. She has a special love for ornaments.

Tjaša Iris mostly does not paint from life but rather draw her subject—sometimes photographing it as well—and making notes on the colors and the composition. She then paints the canvas in her studio from her notes.

Her work has a base and inspiration in paintings among many by Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, The Fauves, Kandinsky, the Society of Six California Colorists...

For the last years her favorite places to paint are the ancient gardens. Her most favorite ones are: Hanbury gardens near Ventimiglia, Italy as well as Capri and Amalfi coast gardens (Ravello). And exotic gardens of French Riviera as gardens in Menton: Serre de la Madone, Maria Serena, Fontana Rosa, Val Rahmeh and the nearby Le Royal...

Even if she is being away from strong Mediterranean light, she carries it with her wherever she goes. This vivid light always stays inside of her, no matter if she finds herself in Northern Europe or Paris…. Happy days, sad days…......no mather what.... In all this years Tjasa's bright vivid happy colours never changed.
